SUMMARY:Vermont's Free Fishing Day (no license required)
DESCRIPTION:MONTPELIER\, Vt. –Vermont’s annual\, statewide Summer Free Fishing Day is Saturday\, June 14 this year\, and it will be highlighted by a free family fishing festival in Grand Isle as well as opening day of the state’s regular bass fishing season. \n“Vermont’s Free Fishing Day gives resident and nonresident anglers the opportunity to go fishing without a license for the day in Vermont lakes and streams\,” said Fish and Wildlife Interim Commissioner Andrea Shortsleeve.  “Free Fishing Day is a great opportunity for an experienced angler to be a mentor to friends who have not gone fishing before.  A day on the water could lead to a lifetime of great experiences and healthy local food.” \nDesigned for young or novice anglers and families\, this exciting event offers a variety of activities to participate in — including basic fishing instruction\, fish biology and ID\, crafts and lure making\, and more.  It also includes a chance for participants to catch big trout in a hatchery pond.  No prior fishing experience is needed\, and Vermont Fish and Wildlife will be supplying fishing rods\, reels and bait for use by participants.

SUMMARY:Vermont Moose Hunt Application Deadline
DESCRIPTION:MONTPELIER — The deadline to apply for a 2025 Vermont moose hunting permit is June 18.  \nMoose permit applications are available on the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department’s website for the hunt limited to Vermont’s Wildlife Management Unit (WMU) E in the northeastern corner of the state. \nThe Vermont Fish and Wildlife Board voted on April 9 to have 80 either-sex moose hunting permits and 100 antlerless moose hunting permits available this year for a hunt limited to Vermont’s Wildlife Management Unit (WMU) E in the northeastern corner of the state.  The science-based hunt is predicted to result in an estimated harvest of about 86 moose\, or about 10 percent of the current moose population in WMU E.  \n“Moose are abundant in WMU E with significantly higher population density than in any other part of the state\,” said Nick Fortin\, Vermont Fish and Wildlife’s moose project leader.  “Moose are the primary host for winter ticks\, and higher moose densities support high numbers of winter ticks which negatively impact moose health and survival.”  \nLottery applications for hunting permits are $10 for residents and $25 for nonresidents.  The deadline to apply is June 18.  Winners of the permit lottery will purchase resident hunting permits for $100 and nonresident hunting permits for $350.  \nHunters who held a permit within the past five years are not eligible to apply for a permit or to buy a bonus point.  Applicants must continue to annually submit a moose permit application if they wish to retain their past bonus permits and accumulate subsequent bonus points. \nFive permits will be available to Vermont military veterans\, three permits will be available for “Special Opportunity” recipients with life-threatening illnesses\, and three permits will be auctioned in accordance with regulations.  \nA drawing for permit winners is scheduled for Wednesday\, July15. \nThe 2025 Moose Season Recommendation and related information about moose research and management are available on Vermont Fish and Wildlife’s website.

SUMMARY:Application Deadline for Muzzleloader Antlerless Deer Hunting Permit
DESCRIPTION:We Can Process Your Application at R&L Archery \nMONTPELIER\, Vt. — Vermont’s muzzleloader season antlerless deer permit applications are now available at Vermont Fish and Wildlife’s website and from license agents.  All applications are made online. A link to the information and online applications is on the Fish and Wildlife home page.  \nThe Fish and Wildlife Board met on May 21 and set antlerless deer permit numbers for the fall deer hunting seasons.  \nHunting for antlerless deer will be allowed statewide during the archery season.  One deer of either sex will be allowed during the October 25-26 youth and novice weekend hunt.  \nThe muzzleloader seasons on October 30-November 2 and December 6-14 will have antlerless permits available for 19 of Vermont’s 21 Wildlife Management Units.  \nLandowners who post their land may not apply for a landowner priority muzzleloader antlerless deer permit.  They are eligible to apply in the regular lottery for an antlerless deer permit. \n“Our goal is to balance deer numbers with what the habitat can support\,” said Nick Fortin\, deer and moose project leader for the Fish and Wildlife Department.  “To maintain a healthy and sustainable deer population\, the 2025 recommendation aims to stabilize deer numbers in much of the state while reducing deer numbers in some areas.” \nThe deadline to apply for a muzzleloader antlerless deer permit is July 31. A lottery drawing of the permit recipients will be held September 9.

SUMMARY:Vermont Free Mentored Fishing Weekend
DESCRIPTION:New Free Mentored Fishing on Labor Day Weekend is a Chance for Experienced Anglers to Pay it Forward \nMONTPELIER\, Vt. – This Labor Day Weekend\, experienced anglers have a special chance to share the joy of fishing.  The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department is asking anyone who regularly spends time on the water to consider taking out a friend or family member in celebration of Vermont’s first ever “Free Mentored Fishing Weekend.” \nThe new annual opportunity was approved this past June as part of Act 47\, a package of updates to the state’s fish and wildlife laws. \nThis opportunity allows a licensed angler to take up to four unlicensed anglers aged 15 years or older to fish for free from Saturday\, August 30\, through Monday\, September 1.  Kids under 15 years old can already fish for free in Vermont.  Free Mentored Fishing Weekend gives adults who have never fished\, or have not fished since childhood\, an easy and welcoming way to try the sport. \n“Every one of us who fishes has a story about the parent\, grandparent or friend who showed us the ropes\,” said Shawn Good\, a fish biologist with the department.  “If you’re an experienced angler\, the new Free Mentored Fishing Weekend is your chance to be that person for someone else.  Invite a friend\, a co-worker or a neighbor to join you.  Show them your favorite spot\, lend them some gear and teach them what you know.  That’s how traditions are passed on.” \nFree Mentored Fishing Weekend is different from Vermont’s longstanding summer and winter Free Fishing Days\, which are geared towards families that already have some fishing savvy.  This new opportunity is designed for adults who want to start fishing and need an experienced mentor to guide them.  \n“I really want to encourage experienced anglers to treat Vermont’s first Free Mentored Fishing Weekend as an opportunity to pay it forward\,” said Jason Batchelder\, Commissioner of Fish & Wildlife and a life-long angler.  “For many of us who love the sport\, mentoring new anglers is as much a part of our calling as exploring new waters or pursuing new species.” \nFor new anglers who are unsure how to connect with a mentor but still want to take advantage of Free Mentored Fishing Weekend\, Vermont Fish & Wildlife will host a special edition of its popular “Fish with a Warden” program.  Three free workshops will be held on Saturday\, August 30\, at 6:00 p.m. at Bomoseen\, Little River\, and Silver Lake State Parks.  Interested anglers can register online at the department’s fishing events calendar.

SUMMARY:September Season Opens for Resident Canada Geese
DESCRIPTION:Details on this year’s waterfowl hunting days are given in the “2025-2026 Syllabus of State and Federal Hunting Regulations for Migratory Birds in Vermont” that is available HERE. \n  \nVERMONT FISH & WILDLIFE \nPress Release \nFor Immediate Release:  August 18\, 2025 \nMedia Contacts:  Andrew Bouton 802-622-4823; David Sausville 802-324-4206 \nVermont’s Resident Canada Goose Season\, Sept. 1-25 \nVermont’s resident Canada goose hunting season will be held September 1 through September 25 to help control Vermont’s resident Canada goose population prior to the arrival of Canada geese migrating south from Canada according to the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department. \nThe season will be open statewide with a daily bag limit of five Canada geese in the Connecticut River Zone and eight in the rest of Vermont. \nA second Canada goose hunting season for resident and migrant birds will be held October 11-November 9 with a daily bag limit of one Canada goose in the Lake Champlain Zone and Interior Vermont Zone.  \nIn the Connecticut River Zone\, the second Canada goose season will be October 13-November 11\, and November 27-December 26 with a daily bag limit of two Canada geese. \nFor a fourth year\, a late Canada goose season will be held targeting resident birds.  Within the Lake Champlain and Interior zones\, the season will be held from December 1 to January 19\, with a five-bird daily bag limit.  The season will run December 27 to January 15 in the Connecticut River zone and applies only to the lands of the zone\, not Connecticut River waters. \nA hunting license is required\, and a waterfowl hunter 16 or older must carry current federal and Vermont duck stamps.  Federal stamps are sold at post offices\, federal refuges and on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service website.  Vermont is not one of the states where you can buy an electronic federal duck stamp\, but you can purchase one from any state that sells them. \nVermont duck stamps can be added to your hunting license on Vermont Fish and Wildlife’s website and through license agents.  The hunter must sign the federal duck stamp.  \nAll migratory game bird hunters must also be registered with the Harvest Information Program (H.I.P.).  This can be done on Vermont Fish and Wildlife’s website or by calling toll-free 1-877-306-7091.  After providing some basic information\, you will receive your annual H.I.P. registration number\, which you then need to record on your hunting license. \nA printable copy of migratory bird hunting regulations can be downloaded from the Vermont Fish and Wildlife website under “Hunt” – “Waterfowl.”
